The Kuruvungva Spring
This sacred spring of The Kuruvungva—by the native Gabrieleno Tongva people and is a natural artesian spring on the campus of University High School in Los Angeles County It is a teaching landscape in the middle of the city and a showcase of cooperation, native landscapes, and the importance of preserving water resources.[1] and has been a sacred resource since ancient times. Also known as Serra Springs- it is California State Historical Landmark number 522.
The springs, called Kuruvungna , were used as a fresh water source by the Tongva people since 400 B.C.E., and continue to produce 22,000 - 25,000 gallons of water a day.[2] The springs are also sometimes referred to as the Gabrieleno Tongva Springs, the Tongva Holy Springs, and the Sacred Springs. The springs have a UCLA Archaeological designation of CA-LAN-382.
